Activity 2: Making a Wiggly Caterpillar

Now, let us see the physical changes that butterflies and frogs undergo as they grow up.

Life Cycle of a Frog

  • A frog goes through four stages of life. It changes and grows at each stage. Frogs lay eggs. That’s where new frogs come from. The eggs hatch in one to three weeks.
  • Then a tadpole hatches from an egg. A tadpole lives in water. It uses gills to breathe. It has no legs.
  • Next, a tadpole grows into a froglet. A froglet looks more like a frog and has a tail. It has legs for hopping and walking. It has lungs for breathing air.
  • An adult frog doesn’t have a tail. A female lays eggs.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

  • There are four stages in the life cycle of a butterfly – the egg stage, the larva stage, the pupa stage, and the butterfly stage.
  • The mother butterfly lays an egg on a leaf or plant.
  • The egg hatches into a small larva or caterpillar. The caterpillar eats leaves and grows bigger and bigger. As it grows bigger it puts on a new, bigger skin. The caterpillar changes its skin for or five times.
  • Then it looks for a good place to rest. It attaches itself to a leaf and makes a pupa or chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, it grows wings and legs.
  • The chrysalis opens and a butterfly comes out. The life cycle begins again.
