Now, let us watch this video lesson with your child to know more herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
Ask your child what he or she ate for breakfast? What do he/she wants for lunch?
Explain to your child that like humans, animals also need food to give them the energy to stay alive and grow. But different animals eat different kinds of foods.
Animals can be classified into 3 main groups based on their eating habit:
- Herbivore – They eat only plants such as leaves, grass, fruits, seeds, nuts. They are also known as the plant-eater animal.
- Carnivore – They consume other animal’s tissue such as flesh, organs, bones. They are also known as the meat-eater animal.
- Omnivore – They both plants and other animals.
Ask your child to name or list the animals that are herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
- Can tigers eat grass?
- Do you think animals can change their eating habits?
- What would happen if animals switch their eating habits?
Some animals change their eating habits due to circumstances, and some others may be unable to digest different types of food. For example:
Pandas used to be a carnivore but now they have become herbivorous animals.
Tigers only eat meat because they cannot digest plants.
Dogs cannot eat chocolate because it is poisonous to them.
